Paul Harris Paul Harris is recognized as the founder of the first Rotary Club in Chicago, Illinois in 1905. It was started with three friends, each coming from a diverse professional background. The title “Rotary” developed from the founding members rotating the meeting among member’s offices. By 1910, sixteen Rotary Clubs then linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. As more clubs were organized in the United States, the movement became international, first to Canada, then to England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name of the organization became Rotary International.
Paul Harris Fellow The Rotary Foundation in 1957 developed the idea of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition award. The concept is simple, anyone making a $1000 gift to the Rotary Foundation can receive the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship award. The individual receives distinctive Paul Harris Fellow medallion, lapel pin, and an attractive certificate.
